This year Wix celebrates the 900th anniversary of the establishment of the Benedictine Priory in 1123, located close to where the Abbey House and present day St Mary's church stands.
Whilst the site has changed many times during the last 900 years, it remains a religious place for rest, reflection & celebration, with some features of the church still evident from the original Priory.
To mark the occasion often reserved to large towns or Cities, a programme of events and activities focusing on the Wix community has been unveiled, kicking off with the Wix 900 Festival.
The festival takes place during the weekend of the 29th April - 1st May, which celebrates this anniversary and highlights the incredible but often unknown history of Wix. Everybody is welcome at all events, which are all free.
The flower festival takes place during the whole weekend based on the history of the church and priory. On Saturday evening the Harwich and Dovercourt choral society will be giving a concert in the church. On Sunday there is a church service led by the Right Revd Bishop Roger Morris, followed by refreshments and a concert by Tendring Brass. This will hopefully take place in the Abbey grounds but if the weather is inclement it will transfer to the Village Hall.
Details of these events and others can be found on banners and posters around the village. If you have any questions about the weekend please phone 01255 870072 or email [email protected].
